Val had honed her skill for estimating time. She’d first developed it when they’d held her captive so many years ago. She shuddered as her thoughts briefly returned to that time in her life. A quick touch and go, like a butterfly landing on a flower. She put that visual in her brain to erase the other, more gruesome vision. Her innate sense of time was a major factor in the success of her escape. She’d timed her assault perfectly. She learned over the years that timing is everything. She knew when to squeeze the sniper rifle, when to land the perfect blow, and when to sit patiently for just the right moment.

She rolled over and pressed the button on her watch at one o’clock on the nose. She crawled out of bed, grabbed her gun, and felt settled in the knowledge that she was currently invisible. A loop of her patterned sleep would continue to replace the actual footage in the camera that was recording her room.

Not bothering to put on her bra, Val quickly donned her T-shirt and jeans and stuffed her gun into her pants. She crept out of her room without making a sound after grabbing the pen containing the darts and the device that would disrupt the laser protection on Leonid’s office door. Earlier in the night she’d taken the time to retrieve the disrupter from her electric toothbrush. She was glad that when she’d first arrived, they hadn’t given her pen or toothbrush a second look. She’d kept the pen on the nightstand the whole time right in front of their noses. The hard feel of the metal against her stomach provided a feeling of security and reminded her that her gun was a natural part of her. She would never give that up without a fight.

Val didn’t worry about Leonid’s guards intercepting her because she didn’t plan on leaving any of them standing and she’d be long gone by the time they came out of dreamland. Sending her first dart down the long hallway caused the first man to slump against the wall. One down, three to go. She’d done her own reconnaissance and established how many she would have to put out of commission before reaching his office.

She had just the right number of darts to eliminate those obstacles, so it was imperative that each hit its mark. Val wasn’t sure what to think as she easily picked off the next two, but the third somehow managed to avoid the final dart.

Fuck. She hated having to kill the man, but she had no choice now. Her agile reflexes kicked into gear as she engaged him. After a quick twist that cracked his neck, she eased him to the ground.

Standing in front of the office door, she pulled out the disruptor and deactivated the laser beam that would send a jolt of energy into anyone daring to cross the threshold into his office. It took Val less than two minutes to hop onto the desk, remove the red covering, and place the minuscule disc above Leonid’s computer.
